Feedback as growth fuel.
In growth-minded living, feedback as growth fuel is what encourages learning and improvement.
It is something that helps the receiver to develop a growth mindset and to be a continuous learner.
An example of a growth-minded feedback question may be:
“I appreciate your persistence and effort on this project!” “What did this experience teach you?”
An opportunity for reflection and continued learning.
In some studies, employees who asked for and received feedback, over 75% felt that the feedback added value.
It’s time for YOU to start using feedback as growth fuel.
here are the top 10 benefits of receiving feedback:
1. Personal Growth
Personal growth happens when feedback is able to provide external perspective on your behavior, attitudes, and actions, helping you recognize areas for improvement.
Fostering self-awareness will also lead to more effective self-development, self-regulation, and offer you a clearer insight and understanding of how you impact the people around you.
2. Enhanced Skills Development
Constructive criticism and suggestion can play an important role in highlighting knowledge gaps, skills deficiencies, and help you to design a path forward in learning.
When the advice you hear is targeted to you directly, from people whom you respect and value their opinion, it acts as an accelerant to your growth capability.
With this newfound clarity, diving deep into acquiring new skills and competencies, manifests as you being more proficient and confident in new domains.
3. Boosted Confidence
Having your efforts validated by hearing positive feedback can be a huge builder for your self-esteem and confidence.
Positive reinforcement encourages you to continue making strides of growth toward your new goals and skills.
4. Improved Personal relationships
Seeking feedback from others shows humility and willingness to grow, which often endears those whom you asked for help to you.
By fostering open communication, trust, and mutual respect- your relationships whether personal or professional will be enhanced.
5. Professional Performance Enhancements
In the workplace, the studio, or even at home, feedback is a crucial part of your development. Helping you to understand your strengths and weaknesses, and helping you to align your performance with project expectations.
Ultimately it will lead to career advancement and personal satisfaction.
6. Increased Innovation and Creative Ideas
Feedback often offers us a fresh perspective, and new ideas. This stimulates our creative brains to keep coming up with new, and innovative ideas.
By challenging assumptions from ourselves and those we interact with, it may inspire new approaches to problem-solving, and even enhance the quality and originality of your work.
7. Improved Decision-Making
Constructive feedback is an excellent tool for cultivating valuable insights that can be put to use in informing your decision-making processes.
When you consider different viewpoints and learn from the experiences of others, you can make more informed and effective choices.
8. Greater Accountability
When you seek regular feedback, you stay accountable to your goals, and to those you work with in achieving them.
Receiving feedback encourages you to maintain high standards of performance, and to take ownership of your actions, leading to more consistent and dependable results.
9. Resilience and Adaptability
Feedback, especially on the hard topics teaches you how to handle criticism in a constructive way, helping you adapt to change.
As you become more resilient, you become better attuned to navigating the complexities of life, enabling you to spring-forward from challenging moments and keep up your momentum.
10. Cultivating A Growth Mindset
So much of your personal development relies on your adapting a growth mindset.
Embracing feedback fosters this growth.
When you believe that your abilities and intelligence can be developed through effort and learning, you begin to seek feedback often as a means of understanding exactly where you are on a subject.
Now, armed with the knowledge that feedback can be used as a fuel for your growth, you are empowered to continually strive for improvement.
Bonus* sometimes giving feedback is hard
Recently, I joined a new fitness club and on my first day at the club, I had noticed some areas of the gym where the sanitary standards where less than stellar to say the least.
Naturally as someone who loves personal development, and who seeks ways to improve everywhere- I offered my observations to the concierge up front.
What I was not expecting was the wincing of the eyes and face of the young lady as I described how dirty some of the areas were.
I had specifically mentioned the changing rooms which to her credit, she likely didn’t traverse the halls of the mens locker room.
In the moment however, I could tell this was no consolation for whatever feeling had caused her pain or embarassment about the messy areas.
Being sensitive to the unfortunate position I had placed her in by offeriing my unsolicited feedback, I began to walk it back a little, and console her on the fact that it was in an area she likely didn’t visit.
You may have said I was feeling an anxiousness at upsetting someone whom I merely intended to offer a healthy, constructive criticism.
Well, lucky for us all Tessa West made a wonderful TED Talk about “anxious niceness”, complete with strategies to give feedback and feel good doing it.
